It’s time to meet your body confident self
Believe it or not, there’s a body confident self in each of us.
The problem is, she’s got lost in all the noise and chatter about what it means to have a ‘good’ body.
But there’s a way to coax her out again, so she can get on with living her best life.
So in this post, I’m sharing a visualisation that will re-connect you with the body confident you.
Watch or read below:
Who is the body confident self?
Your body confident self is the version of YOU that you’d like to BE more of. This is the version that gets on with what’s important to her, without being held back by body consciousness.
This version focuses on her life NOT her body. She sees her body as a tool for getting things done, rather than an ornament to be looked at and critiqued.
There is a body confident self in each and EVERY one of us, she just needs coaxing out. She’s just be worn down by messages telling her she needs to be thinner, fitter or prettier to be worthy.
Meet the body confident YOU
When I start working with a client, one of the first things we do is a visualisation. In this visualisation, I invite my client to meet her body confident self.
This not only gives her a goal to aim for in coaching, but it provides a glimpse of what life can be like beyond body hate.
The visualisation we work through is powerful. Clients experience a range of emotions: from excited and hopeful for what they can achieve with their body confidence to sadness and anger that they’ve wasted so much of life hating their bodies.
Either way, these emotions create the motivation to do the work needed to create a new relationship with their body.
Using visualisation to unleash the body confident you
Visualisation is used extensively in professional sports to help athletes achieve peak performance. It works because your brain can’t tell the difference between something that you’ve already done and something that you’ve visualised!
This means that each time you visualise you at your most body confident, you become more of that version of you!
So, if you want to get a glimpse of what life could be like beyond body hate and start becoming your body confident self, why not try visualisation?
In my coaching programme, I take clients through a detailed guided visualisation, but you can try a simple version yourself by following these three steps:
Firstly, get comfortable and close your eyes.
Take a few deep breaths until you feel relaxed.
Then, visualise you as your body confident self.
Take a few minutes to really notice in detail what’s happening.
What are you doing? Imagine all the activities you will being doing that maybe you currently avoid like swimming, going out with your partner for a night out, taking time for self-care, etc.
What are you thinking? See what your thoughts focus on, for example what you like about your body? What you’re grateful for? Or you aren’t thinking about your body at all!
What are you feeling? Experience how it feels to be your most body confident – liberating, carefree, fun, and joyful.
Repeat this visualisation as often as you like.
The more you practice it, the bigger the impact it will have on you. As you visualise your body confident self on a regular basis, you will become more of that version of you.
Working on your body confident self
Having a clear idea of what life will be like as the body confident you is a powerful foundation and motivator for body image work.
If you need help tapping into the body confident YOU, we work through this on my 1:1 coaching programme, The Body Confidence Journey.
